Japanese Courses in Japan

Our Japanese courses will teach you functional, everyday Japanese with the aim of being able to live and function in Japan independently.

This means being able to do your shopping, ask for things, ask directions, order in restaurants, buy travel tickets, give instructions, read signs, read headlines in newspapers, watch TV, listen to the radio, understand the spoken and written word.

On a more personal level you will be able to communicate with people, ask questions, talk about yourself, your family and friends, your likes and dislikes, you past, present and future. You’ll be able to talk about current affairs, debate issues, give opinions, listen to and understand people in an ever increasing number of contexts and situations.

If you need to learn Japanese for university, you will also learn how to summarize information, write essays, learn more specific terminology and vocabulary, provide technical information, give presentations, to be able to take notes from presentations and lectures, and a whole range of skills necessary to gain entrance to, and be able to meet requirements of a university course.

We offer two types of courses and there is a degree of overlap between them. Intensive Japanese Courses cover functional, everyday Japanese and University Preparation Courses build student’s skills necessary for university life. In all cases you will initially learn everyday Japanese and as your knowledge and skills progress, you will either learn more functional Japanese, or university specific Japanese skills.

The type of course you enroll on will depend on your needs and aims.

If you would like to learn general Japanese then all of our schools offer general Japanese courses. If you need to learn Japanese for university then we have courses from 6 months up to 2 years. All our schools offer both types of course.

The general and University Preparation Course areal identical for a first 6 months. This is because you will need to learn functional Japanese to be able to live and function in Japan independently.

After learning functional Japanese for 6 months, student will either continue the general Japanese course or will begin taking the University Preparation Course.

The University Preparation Course includes building specific skills required to gain entrance to University and to be able to meet the demands and workload of University.

Note: If you already know Japanese up to JLPT 3, then of course you can immediately enroll on a University Preparation Course.

Targets of a General Japanese Course

Students will be able to function in daily conversations, to understand basic sentence patterns and be able to express opinions, write a short essay.

Low intermediate to intermediate level.
Equivalent to Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 2
(Approximately 1,000 Kanji)
Students will be able to have daily conversations without any problems. They will develop more vocabulary and terminology and be able to enter a vocational school.

(22 weeks)
Advanced level.
Equivalent to Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1
(Approximately 2,000 Kanji)
Students will be able to communicate with Japanese with no difficulty. Also, they will have acquired enough Japanese language ability to take entrance examinations for universities.

Elementary

Speaking:  Basic sentence patters (grammar) supported by basic vocabulary resulting in students being able to function in basic conversation.
Listening: Students listen to simple sentences spoken by native Japanese speakers in order to obtain basic information. The listening and speaking element of the curriculum support each other in their aims.
Writing: Learn simple writing and sentence patterns (vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure). You will learn to write hira-gana kata-kana and 400 words Kanji.
Reading: You will learn how to acquire information from written material such as information boards and printed materials. The writing and reading elements of the curriculum support each other.

Intermediate

Speaking: Develop more complex conversation skills and to develop skills is speech making and debates.
Listening: Build skills in obtaining information from everyday spoken Japanese.
Writing: Learn to summarize written text and to wrote letters, and give instructions.
Reading: To develop skills to infer the meaning of more complex sentences (contextualizing). Acquire 1300 words kanji and build a vocabulary bank of 6,000 words.

Advanced

Speaking: Further develop debating and speech making skills.
Listening: Widen listening skills to understand a variety of broadcast media.
Writing: Expand writing skills to the level of writing essays and letters.
Reading: To be able to read newspapers and books. Students will be able to read 1,800 kanji and a total of 8,000 words.

Targets of a University Course

4 3 months Pre Intermediate Review sentence patterns at elementary level and acquire their usage.  Express ones opinions and write a composition
5 6 months Intermediate Acquire smooth communication ability and power of expression. Be able to read and write caring about sentence patterns and formation

7 6 months Advanced Able to talk about specialized fields and general topics. Able to get most of the meaning from newspapers, adverts, magazines etc

Elementary

Listening: Students listen to simple sentences spoken by native Japanese speakers in order to obtain basic information. The listening and speaking element of the curriculum support each other in their aims.
Writing: Learn simple writing and sentence patterns (vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure). You will learn to write hira-gana kata-kana and 300 words Kanji.
Reading: Develop skills to be able to understand simple printed materials present in everyday life (menus, bulletin boards, street signs, directions).

Intermediate

Speaking: Build skills to communicate in more everyday situations and to develop skills in providing opinions and giving speeches.
Listening: To expand skills to be able to ask questions and obtain information in a variety of everyday situation.
Writing: To extend skills to be able to write email, letters, and invitations.
Reading: To enhance reading comprehension of already learned vocabulary and sentence structures and to develop comprehension skills of high frequency kanji text.

Seasonal Courses

Seasonal Courses are a great way to spend a month or so learning Japanese while enjoying the season of the course. These courses areal inclusive packages with course, accommodation and activities included in the cost.

These courses are ideal for those who wish to spend as little as 4 weeks in Japan as a vacation course. They are therefore ideal for students to attend during their school/college vacations, but are open to all people over 16yrs old.
